Vienna has long been the undisputed world capital of classical music, and we open our season with a toast to this beautiful city and its unparalleled musical legacy!

Our first half features two works by the Waltz King, Johann Strauss II: his thrilling showpiece Long Live the Magyar! and On the Beautiful Blue Danube, the most famous waltz ever composed. We are also delighted to participate in the Great Lakes Bay Region’s festival–Fall In... Art & Sol–by performing Nielsen’s Helios Overture. Like so many young musicians, Nielsen made a pilgrimage to Vienna to seek inspiration, the effects of which are on full display in Helios, the personification of the Sun in Greek mythology.

Beethoven moved to Vienna at 22, and it became his home for the rest of his life. The city saw the premieres of his most important works, including his Seventh Symphony. This landmark score celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2013, and is one of his most joyous, energetic works. Michigan composer Kevin Puts follows along this trajectory with Inspiring Beethoven, a musical tale of Beethoven struggling to find the inspiration to compose this Seventh Symphony.

Joining the SBSO for the evening will be guest conductor Laura Jackson, Music Director of the Reno Philharmonic.
